Almost since childhood when her hip joint was misfit by a quack in Rajkot, mom went through the life with one leg short by 1 ½ inch. In her young age, this did not pose any major danger, later it became the most interfering aspect of her life that actually put boundary to her strong desire to go out, meet people and see the world.
As Unnati and I am a mid-career working couple, I kept telling her to keep her social engagement within our time limitations. That was a silent killer. We were always worried, what would happen if she breaks her bone and will remain confined to bed and worse if it were prolonged or permanent bed.
Unnati had gone to Hubli. It was morning of 01st September 2010 at around 5.30 am that mummy sort of collapsed and asked for my help to get up. I rushed and lifted her from the floor, shifted to different room and gave her coffee to drink. She vomited; she felt it was due to gastric problem. Later, in the day doctor confirmed it.
While I was scared due to her fall, I wanted to maintain a façade of ‘All is well’ and decided to go to office, assuring her that will ask Doctor Thakkar to visit. He came saw, said, ‘BP seems to be on higher side but medicine will take care, nothing to worry’. That was very relieving to my scared heart.
On 2nd September, she actually prepared breakfast for me and that made me feel good.
She was feeling better by days between 2nd and 5th of September, which was in line with her past behavior as she never kept sick beyond three days in her entire life except when she had broken her leg in childhood. This added to our feeling that every thing is fine.
This was enough for her to sneak out for group pooja on 6th September, being Monday of Shravan. Mummy gave strict instructions to Unnati, not to disclose it to me as I will be very unhappy about it.
Fever gripped her again on 7th September. After treatment, fever came down by 9th September but weakness remained. Unnati could not stop telling me what had happened on 6th and I was annoyed with Unnati as I could not help the situation.
Her body strength continued to flipflop and looking at her weakness and frequency, we were worried but doctor was sure that nothing is wrong. Shrenik and Prerak did insist that we get her check up done.
Mummy and Unnati did go to Venus to meet Mom’s Ayurvedic doctor, discussed health and came back very confident, decided to carry out checkup in the next week.
Mummy started feeling very weak again on Wednesday. Our worry outgrew confidence of Doctor on 22nd September and insisted to take her to hospital to ensure that she get full time attention.
I am not sure it was right decision, she was admitted at 2 pm and doctors at Sarswati said it was too late in the day Sugar has shot to 492, she is in diabetic comatose and brain has suffered a stroke, heart beat is sinking. At 3.30 pm doctor pronounced her dead.
While we as a family lost our mom, Unnati and I lost our second child after 10 years again.
